Compton pleased Wood Islands ferry hearings going ahead

Wood Islands  –  Belfast-Murray River MLA Darlene Compton is pleased that legislative hearings on the Wood Islands ferry will be going ahead.

Compton was reacting to news that the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Development today unanimously agreed to her request to hold hearings in eastern Prince Edward Island about the ferry and the economic impacts of the reduced service.

“The issues with the ferry service have put a lot of strain on the workers, truckers and local businesses. The latest tourism stats show that ferry traffic was down about fifteen percent in July alone so I felt it was a good idea for a legislative committee to hear directly what the challenges are on the ground in the community and get a better sense of the economic impacts on eastern Prince Edward Island,” says Compton.

Compton hopes that the meeting will take place as soon as possible given that commercial, tourism and post-secondary student traffic heavily use the service at this time of year.

“It was disgraceful to see how long it took for the Premier to wake up to the problems with the ferry this summer. I hope that these hearings will help drive home to him just how important the Wood Islands ferry service is to the Island economy,” Compton says.
