Opposition seeks free vote on potato disinfection motion

CHARLOTTETOWN –  The Official Opposition is asking Premier MacLauchlan to allow his Caucus a free vote on an upcoming Opposition motion about seeking a compromise to cuts to potato disinfection services.

“We have heard extensively from the potato industry with concerns about the wisdom of these cuts,” said Opposition Leader Jamie Fox. “Members of all sides of the House have concerns about it. That’s why we think our motion urging a pause on cuts to give time to reach a compromise solution should be given fair consideration.”

Fox questioned both the Premier and the Agriculture Minister on the cuts and the government’s rigid insistence on cutting the service without fully exploring possible compromise solutions. Despite direct questioning from Fox the Premier refused to commit to allowing his Caucus a free vote on the motion.

“I was disappointed that the Premier wouldn’t clearly commit to letting his own members have a free vote on this important issue. This isn’t a confidence motion for government but it’s an issue of great importance to our number one industry in the province. I hope the Premier reconsiders his position and lets his members vote freely on the issue,” said Fox.
