Refinery upgrade a potential win-win for Island skilled trades: Lantz

CHARLOTTETOWN –   A planned major upgrade to a New Brunswick oil refinery could be a potential win-win for Island skilled workers, says Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz.

“The recent downturn in the energy sector in Western Canada has put hundreds of skilled trades people from the Island in limbo waiting for call backs. A major project like this could provide employment opportunities for those workers to apply their expertise here closer to home which would help our Island economy,” says Lantz.

The $200 million refinery maintenance and upgrade project at the Irving Oil refinery in Saint John will provide short-term employment for up to 3,000 skilled trades people such as pipefitters, electricians and boiler makers from across Atlantic Canada.

“Job growth on the Island has been flat over the past year so a major project like this could be a welcome boost for many Island families,” noted Lantz.
