A New Direction for Healthcare

Progressive Conservative Party Leader Rob Lantz and local area candidates today released his party’s health platform at a news conference in Cornwall.

Lantz stated that health care is the most essential public service that Islanders receive, consuming close to $600 million annually. Costs continue to escalate and service demands expand, threatening the sustainability of existing health programs as well as the ability to provide more services to Islanders.

Lantz detailed initiatives to better balance health prevention and maximizing value for limited public dollars in health care.

Highlights of the platform include covering the cost of blood glucose testing strips for Type-2 diabetics, adding a dedicated ambulance for off-Island patient transfers, recruiting an additional medical oncologist to reduce wait times, better managing costs for out-of-province health services, eliminating parking fees at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, mirroring the federal Children’s Fitness Tax Credit, and beginning planning work to replace Hillsborough Hospital with a modern, facility to better serve community mental health needs.

“Health care is the most essential public service that Islanders receive. We need a new direction for health that puts prevention at the forefront and manages limited dollars to their full use. Our new government will put patients and taxpayers first," said Lantz.
