A clear, measurable plan needed on climate change: Trivers

New Glasgow  –  Prince Edward Island needs to have a clear, measurable plan on climate change that lays out what our targets are and shows what progress is being made, says Rustico-Emerald MLA and Opposition Communities, Land and Environment Critic Brad Trivers.

Trivers made his comments following release of the 2017 Auditor General’s Report which looked at the MacLauchlan government’s climate change programs.

“Climate change is real and Islanders need a real plan on how to tackle it that’s public and measurable. That’s something that this Liberal government has failed to address over the last decade in office, according to the Auditor General’s latest report,” says Trivers.

Among the findings in the Auditor General’s review of climate change programs were:
- No provincial targets for reductions in carbon emissions;

- No provincial risk assessment for climate change adaptation;

- No update to the province’s climate strategy since 2008;

“It’s 2017 so it’s troubling that the province is still working off a 9 year old blueprint for its climate change efforts. Before a penny in carbon tax is collected by the MacLauchan government we need to have a clear, measurable plan for how to reduce our carbon footprint for all Islanders to see because we’re all going to be affected by it,” says Trivers.
