Better community engagement needed on waste management site: Myers

Cardigan  – Georgetown-St. Peters MLA Steven Myers is calling for better community engagement from the MacLauchlan government around a proposed waste management facility on the Baldwins Road.

“This is another example of this government’s poor track of record and consulting and engaging residents. Many in the community were caught off guard by this proposal because the ads ran in the newspapers over the holidays when people weren’t paying attention. I think the government should hit pause and try to make a better effort to inform residents before rushing ahead on this,” says Myers.

The Department of Communities, Land and Environment is currently undertaking an environmental assessment for a new waste management facility on the Baldwins Road. Advertisements for a public meeting on the proposal ran over the holidays in local newspaper and following a public meeting last night members of the public have ten days to provide comment back to the province.

“When a bridge was being replaced in the Premier’s riding there were not one but two public meetings and plans were eventually altered to reflect community feedback. I would expect that the people in our district would get the same treatment that people in the Premier’s district got,” says Myers.
