Clear message being heard at school family meetings: Myers

Georgetown  – Georgetown-St. Peters MLA and Opposition Education Critic Steven Myers says the message to the MacLauchlan government from Island parents, students and communities at this week’s school closure meetings has been clear.

“There have been a lot of well thought out presentations from the public in both Charlottetown and Kinkora this week. What I found interesting is that none of the nearly fifty speakers to date have endorsed the Premier’s school closure plan. The message being delivered is clear if this tired government is bothering to listen to Islanders,” says Myers.

As part of the MacLauchlan government’s school closure plan meetings are being held this week and next in affected school families to get public feedback. Among the presenters to date have been local Home and School representatives, current and former teachers, students, municipal official and community leaders. Many have questioned the fairness of a non-independent review process, the lack of an elected school board to have community accountability, and have raised concerns that proposed rezoning solutions won’t accomplish their intended goals in practice.

“From top to bottom there are questions, concerns and anxiety being raised about the MacLauchlan government’s flawed process that’s become about cutting costs instead of student excellence. That’s why a growing number of presenters are agreeing with our call for a moratorium on closures until an elected school board is in place that can run a fair and independent process to address overcrowding issues in many urban schools,” says Myers.
