Compton looking forward to action on Wood Islands ferry

CHARLOTTETOWN – Belfast – Murray River MLA Darlene Compton is looking forward to action to secure the long term future of the Wood Islands ferry following the federal election.

“The new federal government elected by Canadians has identified infrastructure as a top goal to help grow the economy and I know that a strong case can be made for the importance of the ferry in that context,” said Compton.

Compton stated that the Wood Islands ferry is a vital piece of economic infrastructure in eastern Prince Edward Island, used by more than 350,000 passengers and 14,000 commercial vehicles in 2014, shipping a wide variety of Island goods and products to off-Island markets. The ferry also serves as a gateway for visitors between Nova Scotia and eastern Prince Edward Island.

“A long-term funding agreement for the Wood Islands ferry would strengthen the service going into the future and that would benefit our economy greatly. I know that this is something that Cardigan MP Lawrence MacAulay also supports. I look forward to working with Lawrence, the province and the federal government to see that happen as soon as possible by securing a long-term funding deal for the ferry,” said Compton.
