Delays in Prince County Hospital helipad repairs sign of poor priorities

Summerside  –  Taking more than eighteen months to address needed repairs to the helipad  at the Prince County Hospital  is a sign of poor priorities by the MacLauchlan Liberals, says Opposition Leader Jamie Fox.

“I raised this safety issue with government back in January and was told it would be fixed by this spring. In the spring we were told it would be fixed by summer. Now we are hearing it may be done this fall. Placing penny pinching over patient safety is a sign of poor priorities from the MacLauchlan Liberals,” says Fox.

The helipad at Prince County Hospital assists the airlift of critically ill patients to mainland health facilities for further treatment. A safety inspection by Transport Canada in April 2015 flagged issues around the helipad. In response Health PEI closed the helipad to night flights and instituted a protocol to transport patients requiring nighttime airlift by ambulance to Slemon Park for transfer to mainland facilities. In January 2016, Health PEI indicated repairs would be complete by spring. During the Spring Sitting of the Legislature the government moved that target to the summer. Repairs are now planned to take place this fall at an estimated cost of $200,000.

“We’ve been fortunate that this ongoing situation hasn’t had a tragic outcome for patients yet. That’s a testament to the dedication of our front line health workers. For this situation to drag on more than a year and a half shows what a low importance the MacLauchlan Liberals place on front line health services at Prince County Hospital,” says Stratford-Kinlock MLA and Opposition Health Critic James Aylward.
