Empty seniors unit a waste of valuable housing: Fox
KINKORA – Opposition Leader Jamie Fox is questioning government housing priorities when a six-unit seniors housing complex in Kinkora is being heated while sitting empty for a decade when there’s a community need for seniors housing.
“This building is already costing Island taxpayers daily for heat and electricity so it should be meeting the housing needs of our seniors,” said Fox. ““Ten years have gone by and nothing has been done to get this vacant unit into operation. How many other seniors’ buildings are vacant and continue to be heated? These units are needed by our residents so we can’t afford to let them sit vacant year after year.”
Fox called attention to a further major concern, noting that the two adjacent government housing units that are occupied by seniors do not have fire extinguishers. “These seniors have been asking for this important safety equipment for several months. Why would government-run senior’s facilities not have fire extinguishers? This is a tragedy waiting to happen,” said Fox.
As for the vacant building, Fox said he has been advised that the units could be made operational without major repairs and is urging government to address the issue right away.
