Food Rate increase a tiny, welcome step forward: Lantz

CHARLOTTETOWN –   A modest increase to food rates for social assistance clients is a welcome tiny step forward but will not address underlying issues around poverty and food insecurity for Islanders, says Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz.

“There’s no denying there are thousands of vulnerable Islanders in need but this modest increase will barely scratch the surface of the root challenges these Islanders face. In the case of a four person household with a single parent the monthly increase will be fourteen dollars. Fourteen dollars a month won’t make much of a dent in the food security of those families,” says Lantz.

Lantz observed that numerous community groups have noted that government’s Social Action Plan to reduce poverty has been more of a public relations exercise than a public policy tool and stop gap announcements like this reinforce that perception.

“Government has tied its many fee and license increases to inflation yet it doesn’t do the same for supports for our most vulnerable. This contradiction is a major roadblock to opportunity for low-income Islanders,” says Lantz.
