Food safety and security investments welcome news: Lantz

CHARLOTTETOWN –  Federal and provincial investments in food safety and security measures are welcome news for the Island potato industry, said Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz.

“Our potato industry is facing a real challenge from criminal acts of food tampering. Left unchecked these criminal acts pose a threat to our hard earned market position so it’s important that our farmers have the tools to protect both consumers and their investments,” said Lantz.

Lantz made his comments following a news conference where federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea announced a $1.5 million investment to support increased food screening technology for Island farmers.

“I’m pleased to see both the federal and provincial governments recognizing the seriousness of this situation and partnering with our producers to invest in increased use of food screening technology. We all wish that these actions weren’t necessary but we have to work together to protect consumers and a major driver of our provincial economy,” said Lantz.
