Georgetown forgotten on Premier’s Economic Councils: Myers

Georgetown -  Georgetown-St. Peters MLA and Opposition Rural Development Critic Steven Myers says that Georgetown seems to have been forgotten in Premier MacLauchlan’s latest round of community economic councils.

“Georgetown is the capital of Kings County and has a lot of positives to build on economically. It has an engaged community, important industrial infrastructure in the shipyard and port facilities, post-secondary training through Holland College, and attractive cultural and food experiences for the tourism sector. It’s a shame that Premier MacLauchlan and his tired Liberal government don’t see it that way,” says Myers.

A recent appointment of 26 community representatives to a network of Regional Economic Advisory Councils failed to include any entrepreneurs or community representatives from the Georgetown area, despite the area being identified as one of the potential anchors of the Island’s burgeoning marine technology sector.

“It’s a missed opportunity for the MacLauchlan government not to recognize the potential this community has in the marine, cultural and tourism sectors to name just a few. It seems like the only time the Premier notices Georgetown is when there’s a conference to be co-chaired, a photo op to be staged, or a fight to stop his government’s efforts to close schools,” says Myers.
