Government reversal on teacher cuts welcome news: Lantz
CHARLOTTETOWN – Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz is welcoming news that the province has reversed course on its plan to cut teaching positions from Island classrooms this fall.
“Government backtracking on teacher cuts is good news for Island students,” said Lantz. “I applaud students, parents and teachers for taking a public stand on the importance of having quality teachers in Island classrooms to improve learning.”
Lantz noted that weeks of sustained pressure from the Opposition over the lack of planning or vision behind the cuts and a vocal public reaction from Islanders helped government decide to back off on the cuts.
“Left unchecked these cuts and others would have stood and resulted in larger class sizes which are a roadblock to effective learning. This was a hard fought win that shouldn’t have been necessary had the government engaged in meaningful dialogue with teachers, school boards and parents before making these cuts in the first place,” observed Lantz.
