HGS closure a blow to tech sector and rural Prince Edward Island: MacKay
Montague – News of another business closure and job losses is a blow to the technology sector and to rural Prince Edward Island, says Kensington-Malpeque MLA and Economic Development and Tourism critic Matthew MacKay.
MacKay made his comments in response to the news that the Montague location of HGS will be closing, putting more than fifty Islanders out of work as early as March. HGS provides technical and customer support to clients of Virgin Mobile.
“Fewer jobs available, a shrinking workforce and more business closures are not a recipe for economic growth. Unfortunately this is another case of the softening economy here which a recent Stats Canada report noted,” said MacKay.
MacKay observed that this business had operated successfully in a rural community for close to fifteen years and at peak operations employed more than 120 people.
