LaVie and federal MP’s listen to concerns of Island fishers

Charlottetown – Island fisheries groups met recently with federal and provincial representatives to discuss pressing issues in the Island fishery.

“Decisions are being made in Ottawa that affect the Island fishery so it’s important that federal MP’s hear first hand from Island fishers about the challenges being faced on our wharves. It’s disappointing that the Premier and Fisheries Minister have been so silent on these issues impacting our fishery,” said Souris-Elmira MLA and Opposition Fisheries Critic Colin LaVie.

LaVie and federal MP’s Mel Arnold and Mark Strahl, members of the federal Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans, met with a series of stakeholder groups last week including the PEI Seafood Processors Association, the PEI Fishermen’s Association, and the Prince County Fishermen’s Association to discuss pressing issues in the Island fishery. Among the issues discussed were tuna and halibut quotas, permanent access to snow crab quota, export and trade, and unilateral increases to lobster carapace size and the economic impact of all of these issues on Island fishers.

“It was good to meet with Mr. LaVie and the federal officials. They listened to our concerns over the carapace size increase and will be taking these concerns to Ottawa,” said Prince County Fishermen’s Association President Lee Knox.
