LaVie wants improved pedestrian safety for MacPhee Avenue

SOURIS - Souris-Elmira MLA Colin LaVie is calling on the provincial government to improve pedestrian safety on MacPhee Avenue in Souris in advance of the upcoming summer tourism season.

“Here we have a road with no shoulders or sidewalk that services our Manor, the Sportplex, the Souris Food Park and a number of private homes, and is in close proximity to Souris Hospital as well as our Provincial Access Centre,” stated LaVie. “This road is also the only trucking route for truckers using the Magdalen Islands ferry that increases traffic in the area along with cyclists.

”MacPhee Avenue runs from Main Street to Breakwater Street and leads to the Magdalen Island ferry terminal. Currently trucks and heavy vehicles must take this route, as they are not allowed to use Breakwater Street due to restrictions.

“This government has promised to invest in paved shoulders on MacPhee Avenue for close to four years now,” said LaVie. “It's time to widen this provincially-owned road, and also install sidewalks for the safety and well-being of local residents and tourists alike.”
