Lantz questions school board staffing uncertainty

CHARLOTTETOWN –  Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz is questioning why there appears to be uncertainty about staffing levels at Island school boards for the coming year.

“It’s surprising that the government hasn’t shared the staffing number with the boards at least privately. It shouldn’t be an issue if a status quo budget is in the works and if it isn’t then government should be upfront with the boards about that. I'm becoming concerned that we haven't seen the end of teacher cuts that have occurred over the past three years,” said Lantz.

Lantz noted that over the past week government has made multiple announcements of new spending in the Legislature, including in education, which weren’t held up by the budget process. Additionally, both UPEI and Holland College recently approved their budgets for the coming year and based their tuition increases on anticipated funding increases after working closely for months with government officials.

“We have examples in the recent past where budgets weren’t tabled and passed until well into the fall without creating this level of confusion. The only difference here is that government doesn’t seem to want to tell the school boards how many positions they plan to fund,” said Lantz.
