Lantz releases environment and energy platform

CHARLOTTETOWN – Progressive Conservative Party Leader Rob Lantz today released his party’s environment and energy platform today.

Lantz pointed out that the issues of environment and energy are deeply intertwined. As an example Lantz noted that rebating the 9 per cent provincial portion of HST on residential electricity has an environmental benefit. Close to one-third of the Island’s electricity now comes from renewable energy sources like wind which makes electricity a better environmental option for heating homes than using oil.

Lantz laid out a series of steps to advance focused environmental initiatives and capitalize on opportunities for new economic growth in renewable energy and technology.

Environment and Energy Platform Backgrounder

HST rebate - A new Rob Lantz Government will rebate the provincial portion of the HST on residential electricity.

An increasing number of Island homes rely on electricity for all or part of their heating needs. Close to one-third of the Island’s electricity is generated through local, renewable sources such as wind energy, making electricity a more environmentally friendly heating option than oil.

The introduction of the HST nearly tripled the tax burden on residential electricity, serving as a disincentive for Islanders to select more environmentally friendly energy options.

Water Act - A new Rob Lantz Government will engage Islanders in a public dialogue on the principles and policies that should be included in a new Water Act to preserve and protect the province’s water resources, including further evidence-based scientific research into the issue of deep water wells.

Buffer zones - Protecting our Island waterways is an issue of growing concern to the public and the farm community. Experience has shown that a “one size fits all” approach to buffer zones has limitations.

A new Rob Lantz Government will work with watershed groups and farm community to better focus buffer zone protections towards areas of greatest need to better protect Island waterways.

Tree planting - Increased reforestation can be of great benefit to the Island’s environment. A new Rob Lantz Government will work with local environmental groups to plant an additional one million trees in environmentally sensitive areas during its first term of office.

Renewable energy - .Prince Edward Island has achieved great success in the development of renewable energy, with close to one-third of the Island’s electricity being generated through wind power.

A new Rob Lantz Government will encourage further develop of local renewable energy sources by the private sector and communities.

Regional energy - New infrastructure projects across the region hold the promise of increased economic development and increased capacity for stable, energy sources. A new Rob Lantz Government will explore development and procurement opportunities through the Maritime Link hydroelectric project and the Energy East pipeline project.

Conservation officers - In order to promote greater cooperation between government and the farm community a new Rob Lantz Government will review the current administrative practices for provincial conservation officers related to the use of firearms.
