MacLauchlan Liberals disrespecting Island teachers with foot dragging on back pay: Myers
Cardigan – Withholding back pay for Island teachers is the latest example of the MacLauchlan Liberals disrespect for Island teachers, says Georgetown-St. Peters MLA and Opposition Education Critic Steven Myers.
“This government keeps asking Island teachers to do more and more with less and resources. Student/teacher ratios are rising and classroom supports are dropping. Now to top it all off the MacLauchlan Liberals are trying to pick the pocket of teachers by stealing their back pay owed to them,” says Myers.
Myers was referring to the refusal of the MacLauchlan government to honour an arbitration ruling in May awarding Island teachers back pay due retroactive to October 2015. Three months after that decision was rendered Island teachers are still waiting to receive that back pay owed to them by government.
“Getting stiffed on their back pay by the MacLauchlan Liberals is one of many anxieties we are hearing from Island teachers, including teachers being asked at the last minute to teach classes for the coming year that they have received no training for. All of these things are having an effect on morale and will ultimately impact the learners in our classrooms,” says Myers.
