MacLauchlan Liberals failing most vulnerable: Fox
Trustee services are the latest example of the MacLauchlan Liberal government
failing to properly support programs and services that affect vulnerable
Islanders, says Opposition Leader Jamie Fox.
Fox made his comments following release of the 2017 Auditor General’s Report that examined the operations of the Office of the Public Trustee as part of its review.
“For the second straight year an Auditor General’s Report has found issues with services for vulnerable Islanders within the Premier’s own department. Last year it was maintenance enforcement. This year it’s the Office of the Public Trustee. Both provide valuable public services to the public. There seems to be a pattern here when it comes to the Premier making sure his department is looking out for vulnerable Islanders,” says Fox, who also serves as Opposition Justice and Public Safety Critic.
Among the findings in the Auditor General’s review of the Office of the Public Trustee were:
- Weak internal financial controls for client funds of close to $9 million;
- Incomplete records and reporting for close to 300 clients;
- No tools in place to measure or report performance
“This tired government doesn’t blink an eye when it comes to shelling out millions for projects like eGaming, Mill River or Geosweep. Yet it can’t ensure that the resources are in place to protect the most vulnerable of Islanders? That’s not right. I wish this government would put half the energy into supporting Islanders in need that it puts into its schemes and coverups,” says Fox.
