MacLauchlan School Closure process clearly ‘off the rails’: Myers

Montague  – The Montague School Family meeting held last night is the clearest sign yet that the MacLauchlan government’s school closure process has gone off the rails, says Georgetown-St. Peters MLA and Opposition Education Critic Steven Myers.

“Parents, students and staff have legitimate concerns about the independence of this process. What happened last night does nothing to ease those concerns that this is just a smoke and mirror exercise. You have a deputy minister chairing the meeting who is in apparent conflict due to dual roles, a Minister who says when yet to be approved changes will take effect and education officials interrupting presenters to argue with them. It’s a trainwreck and it’s time for the brakes to be put on this whole process,” says Myers.

Myers was referring to a presentation by Belfast-Murray River MLA Darlene Compton who referenced comments made about student excellence by Public Schools Branch officials at the last Montague School Family meeting. Compton’s comments were challenged by PSB official Bob Andrews as inaccurate, despite most people in the room recalling the comments and the media coverage that followed them.

“The question I have asked since day one is how will all of this improve student excellence. I was told at a public meeting that student excellence wasn’t a consideration which I have a problem with. Close to three dozen presentations have been made at the last three meetings in Charlottetown, Kinkora and now Montague and not a single presenter has endorsed the proposed changes, including teachers themselves,” says Belfast-Murray River MLA Darlene Compton.Myers is calling on Premier MacLauchlan to immediately suspend the school closure process and remove Mr. Andrews from the file.
