MacLauchlan must answer on HST hike for Islanders: Fox
CHARLOTTETOWN - Opposition Leader Jamie Fox and Islanders are demanding that Premier MacLauchlan’s government immediately confirm their intentions to raise the HST on Prince Edward Island.
“Today’s New Brunswick budget just confirms what’s been widely speculated on. That the three Maritime Premiers have conspired in secret since at least last November to hike the HST across the region, pocketing millions in extra tax revenue,” said Fox. “At least the Premiers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were open about their plans to raise taxes. Our Premier continues to hide in the shadows about his plans to raise taxes on Islanders.”
Fox made his comments following release of the New Brunswick budget which contained a two percent increase to the HST on July 1, leaving both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia with a 15 percent HST. Prince Edward Island’s HST rate is currently 14 percent. Government ministers and officials have repeatedly avoided directly addressing the question of an HST hike on Islanders in the next provincial budget.
“The three Premiers met here in Charlottetown on November 6 for a liberal fundraising dinner. Was the plan to raise the HST discussed in secret then? The Premier likes to say he’s open and transparent so here’s a perfect opportunity. It’s time. We’re ready. Tell Islanders what your HST plans are in the next budget,” challenged Fox.
