Myers slams cuts at Holland College campus in Georgetown

Georgetown -  Georgetown-St. Peters MLA and Opposition Rural Development Critic Steven Myers wants to know what became of funding announced for upgrades to the Georgetown Holland College Campus now that programming there is being pared back and the work hasn’t happened.

“Skilled trades are vital to economic growth and provide good paying careers for many Islanders. That’s why I was pleased to hear that the Holland College campus was getting funding for upgrades and expansion this summer but with a new school year rapidly approaching no work has begun and programs like pipefitting are being quietly axed. People in the community want to know what’s going on,” says Myers.

In June the MacLauchlan government and the federal government announced funding of $741,768 cost shared equally to upgrade and expand facilities at the Georgetown Holland College campus. The Georgetown Holland College campus offers post-secondary training in skilled trades like pipefitting, welding and plumbing. The work was slated to begin in early summer but with the new school year approaching none of the work has moved ahead and prospective students are being told that the pipefitting program has been discontinued.

“Last week I raised concerns about Georgetown being excluded from the Premier’s economic councils and now funding committed to upgrades to skilled trades programs in the community isn’t happening either. I hope that money wasn’t diverted to clean up the mess his tired Liberal government made with the student residence expansion at the Charlottetown campus,” says Myers.
