Myers wants new tugs built in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN – Georgetown-St. Peters MLA Steven Myers is calling on the MacLauchlan government to take immediate action to work with East Isle Shipyard to secure a recently announced request for tugboat services for the Royal Canadian Navy.

Myers was responding to a media report out of Halifax that the Royal Canadian Navy is pursuing outsourcing options to replace tugboat operations at Her Majesty’s Canadian Dockyard Halifax as well as CFB Esquimalt in British Columbia.

“This is yet another excellent opportunity to re-open our shipyard and employ local skilled labour here at home,” said Myers. “This business case calls for four new large tugboats, which is our shipyard’s expertise as Irving’s main tug-building site. We have the quality facilities, advanced technology and skilled labour force to build these vessels.”

Myers points out that this operational side of the contract is available for up to 25 years, which could mean further maintenance and upkeep work for the Georgetown yard on a go-forward basis. The deadline for this process closes at the end of the month.
