New appointment process resembles old process: Opposition

CHARLOTTETOWN – A rebranded appointment process announced for agencies, boards and commissions bears a striking resemblance to the previous process in place for the last eight years, contends the Official Opposition.

“Unfortunately this is little more than a rebranding exercise as the only difference between the Engage PEI process announced today and the previous Participate PEI process is the name,” said Rustico-Emerald MLA Brad Trivers. “The criteria and guidelines between the two models are identical, right down to the frequently asked questions on the government’s own website.”

Trivers observed that both a lack of promotion and a lack of an arms-length process may limit the pool of possible quality candidates for positions and leave the door open to questions of favoritism, noting that a defeated Liberal candidate and a lobbyist with close ties to the government were recently named to the board of UPEI.

“There are many agencies, boards and commissions where Islanders have an opportunity to make a contribution to the public good so the more open and transparent the appointment process is the more engaging it will be for people to put their names forward,” said Trivers.
