Opposition Leader demands suspension of three senior government officials

Charlottetown - Opposition Leader Jamie Fox is demanding government immediately suspend three senior government officials identified today by the Auditor General as having broken the law during the E-gaming scandal.

Michael Mayne, the former Deputy Minister of the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning, currently the CEO of Health PEI;  Neil Stewart, former executive director of IIDI and the current Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, and Doug Clow, former Deputy Minister of Finance, Energy and Municipal Affairs, currently vice-chair of IRAC were all publically identified by the Auditor General at today’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts looking into the scandal.

These senior officials were involved with the decision to approve the $950,000 e-gaming loan, based on a loan guarantee that did not have the appropriate authorization. The necessary approval of Executive Council was not obtained which violated the Financial Administration Act. All three were serving on the IIDI Board of Directors at the time in question.

Under Section 76 of the Financial Administration Act the Finance Minister is empowered to suspend from their employment officials who had knowledge of the violation of any law relating to the disbursement of public money.
