Opposition suggests emergency response review

CHARLOTTETOWN - The aftermath of a recent industrial vehicle accident may be the right time for a review of emergency response capabilities, suggests the Official Opposition.

On August 21st a fuel truck carrying approximately 46,000 liters of fuel overturned on a high traffic corridor in an industrial area in Charlottetown, close to the Energy from Waste plant and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. A still to be determined amount of fuel escaped into the soil and the nearby Hillsborough River.

“Thanks to the quick response of first responders a more serious outcome was avoided and our first responders should be applauded for their actions,” said Borden-Kinkora MLA Jamie Fox and Opposition Critic for Justice & Public Safety. “That’s why a review of contingency plans by the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) would be a good step so that they can be compared to this incident and updated as needed.”

Fox noted that given the proximity of the hospital, the sewage treatment plant, and nearby industrial facilities the risk of a greater incident was real which underscores the importance of reviewing emergency response protocols and available equipment.

Rustico-Emerald MLA and Opposition Environment Critic Brad Trivers seconded the suggestion of a review, given the large volumes of fuel and industrial materials transported through communities across the province.

“Our environment can be very sensitive to damage when fuel spills and industrial accidents occur so it’s important that our contingency plans are as up to date as possible. I think this would be a positive, pro-active step that would help our communities, our first responders, and our environment,” said Trivers.
