Opposition welcomes Ministerial Order on bottled water

Charlottetown  – News of a Ministerial Order suspending water export developments until after the Water Act is complete is a welcome development, says Rustico-Emerald MLA and Opposition Communities, Land and Environment Critic Brad Trivers.

“Water is our most precious resource and the debate over a proposed bottling plant in Brookvale has shown how passionately Islanders value the protection of our water resource. When the Minister recently appeared at Standing Committee on this issue Opposition MLA’s suggested that the Minister consider suspending any approvals for this project until the work on the Water Act is complete and I’m glad he listened to our suggestion and acted,” says Rustico-Emerald MLA and committee member Brad Trivers.

The Opposition PC Caucus, the Opposition Green Caucus, the PEI Watershed Alliance, the Coalition for the Protection of Water, other groups and many Islanders at large have publicly expressed concerns about the proposed water bottling plant in Brookvale and the larger idea of commercial exports of local water resources.

“It only makes sense that the province not approve any water export development projects while Islanders are still being consulted on a new Water Act. Many Islanders have concerns about water exports so when the Water Act is finalized we expect there to be protections in place for our local water resources from this type of activity,” says Morell-Mermaid MLA and committee member Sidney MacEwen.
