PC Caucus focuses on accountability gaps around tax dollars

Charlottetown  – Questions about gaps in accountability and transparency by the MacLauchlan government with tax dollars were the focus of questions from Opposition PC MLA’s in the Legislature today.

“The MacLauchlan government keeps saying this isn’t how they do business but half-measures won’t address the gaps in accountability and transparency Islanders keep learning about. The Premier needs to be more concerned about protecting taxpayers than protecting his party,” says Opposition Leader Jamie Fox.

Opposition PC MLA’s Jamie Fox, Matthew MacKay, Darlene Compton and Steven Myers focused on gaps in accountability and transparency by the MacLauchlan government related to ministerial travel, codes of conduct for contractors, and board governance of public lending institutions, several related to the Auditor General’s Report on the failed eGaming scandal.

Fox noted that the PC party proposed whistleblower legislation in the last election, along with several other accountability reforms such as public mandate letters, public disclosure of loan writeoffs and creation of a Lobbyist Registry. All items originally opposed by the MacLauchlan government but eventually later reluctantly adopted.
