Phillip Brown Speech

I move the nomination of and endorse Rob Lantz as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.  I ask you - and all Islanders - to join with me in making him the next Premier of Prince Edward Island.

Rob Lantz is married to Kelly, and is the proud father of Brodie and Ronan, both of whom are playing hooky today to be here to support their dad.

Rob graduated from both our provincial educational institutions, the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College.

Rob recognized the power of technology, and came to understand how it would shape our world.  Rob has always embraced new ideas, new ways of thinking.

Education is Rob’s top priority.  He holds a passionate belief that we must provide our children with the skills and training they need to excel in the global realities of the 21st century.

For the past 16 years. Rob has worked at DeltaWare Systems, a business that is a great Island success story.  He has excelled.  He leads a team in a fast paced, high pressure environment.  He consistently demonstrates a keen ability to multi-task, think on his feet, motivate people, work with people and get the job done.

Rob believes this is the type of business  the Island economy must embrace.  Built at home.  By Islanders.  Smart thinkers with bold new ideas.

Rob is a proven community leader. Elected to Charlottetown City Council in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.  He has demonstrated commitment, enthusiasm, and perseverance.

As Rob’s abilities became noticed, his responsibilities grew.  He served as chair of the Youth Advisory Board, then the Human Resources Committee, the Police Services Committee, and, for the last four years, the challenging Planning & Heritage Committee.

He spearheaded the introduction of major bylaw amendments with progressive new approaches to planning and community design.

Rob understands the importance of communities, and he wants to be an advocate for them.  He believes that Government needs to encourage sustainable community development across this Island – not set up road blocks to it.

Following Rob’s announcement that he would not re-offer, a Guardian editorial noted that “…planning issues are fraught with peril — criticized if you do and criticized if you don’t…  Mr. Lantz was able to stickhandle his way through controversial planning issues...  He … earned a reputation as a competent, reliable and fiscally conservative — if not dynamic — member of council.

Rob’s Island roots run deep.

In the late 1700’s his ancestors landed at Point Prim and built one of the Island’s first communities out of the wilderness.

Rob’s great grandfather built a lobster processing plant at Lantz's corner and attracted families from Nova Scotia to move to Point Prim and make it a success.

Rob has learned the lessons of his great-grandfather.  He knows that we need to keep our talented people at home – and attract newcomers – to stay relevant and prosperous.

To many Islanders, the Lantz name will forever be associated with compassionate, responsive health care.  Rob’s grandfather, Dr. Joe Lantz, was one of the founders in 1929 of the Polyclinic, PEI’s first medical clinic.

Joe was also a farmer.  He won awards for his prize cattle.  He was ahead of his time -  an environmentalist and innovator.  I guess Rob gets it honest.

Rob’s father, Dr. Brodie Lantz taught his children that public service begins at home, and that a just society is built on kindness and compassion.

I support Rob Lantz because he has what it takes to lead us in a new direction.  A direction based on creativity, smart thinking, and respect.

I ask all of you – all Islanders - to join us on that path.

Thank you.

Philip Brown
