Premier shouldn’t muzzle Speaker on Legislature recall over eGaming scandal
Charlottetown – PremierWade MacLauchlan shouldn’t be muzzling the Speaker over recalling the Legislature to address theAuditorGeneral’s Report on the eGaming scandal, says Opposition Leader Jamie Fox.
“It’s obvious that Premier MacLauchlan doesn’t want to deal with the eGaming scandal and has put the muzzle on the Speaker. That’s not right. Islanders want answers from the MacLauchlan government not more coverups,” said Fox.
Earlier this week Fox wrote Speaker Buck Watts on behalf of the Opposition PC Caucus requesting that Watts recall the Legislature to deal with the scathing Auditor General’s Report on the eGaming scandal. Among the many financial and ethical abuses highlighted in the report were:
*Secret loans involving millions of tax dollars that were hidden from public oversight;
*Conflicts of Interest involving multiple senior government executives and Premier’s Office staff;
*Unlawful destruction of files, documents and communications
*A lack of cooperation with the Auditor General’s Office by several government departments during the audit, including departments led by Premier MacLauchlan
Watts wrote Fox today to reject the request to call the Legislature back early.
“The Premier can’t run and hide on this forever. He has to take ownership for the actions taken by his government and Islanders are demanding that the Premier put protecting the public interest before protecting the interest of the Liberal party,” said Fox.
