Premier’s comments on Island seniors unfair: Fox
CHARLOTTETOWN – Recent comments by Premier Wade MacLauchlan about Island seniors are unfair and warrant an apology, says Opposition Leader Jamie Fox.
During a recent year end media interview Premier MacLauchlan identified Island snowbirds as one of the major contributors to the province’s trade imbalance, suggesting they should stay in province longer.
“The vast majority of snowbirds are seniors who are no longer in the workforce after having worked all their lives contributing to the local economy and paying taxes. They’re no more the problem than the thousands of Islanders commuting to western Canada for work due to the lack of jobs here at home,” said Fox.
Fox went on to say that province’s trade imbalance is due to more goods being imported onto the Island than are exported off the Island, not how long some Island seniors spend south during the winter.
“Blaming Island seniors for this government’s poor economic growth in my opinion is unfair. The Premier should apologize for suggesting Island seniors are the problem instead of his government’s economic policies,” said Fox.
