Public Accounts Committee begins review of eGaming Report

Stratford  – It will take well more than one meeting for the Public Accounts Committee to properly review the many issues identified in the Auditor General’s Report into the eGaming scandal, says Public  Accounts Committee Chair James Aylward.

"Today was the first meeting of the Public Accounts Committee that dealt with the eGaming report since it was released. The Auditor General’s Office put a tremendous amount of time and resources into preparing the report over the last 18 months so it’s not realistic to think that our committee would be able to rush through it all in a single meeting. That wouldn’t be fair to anyone,” said Aylward.

Auditor General Jane MacAdam and her staff presented today to the Public Accounts Committee on the 52 page eGaming Report, along with continued review of the 2016 Auditor General’s Report. After an hour addressing objections from government MLA’s on the committee over procedure and attempts to secure documents the Committee moved onto review of the 2016 Auditor General’s Report focusing on the Maintenance Enforcement Program.

Many of the issues identified in the Maintenance Enforcement Program review mirror issues found in the eGaming audit such as poor financial controls, lax policy guidelines and weak oversight.

“I had hoped we would get a bit further along with the eGaming audit today but unfortunately the government majority on the committee was determined to stonewall the proceedings. That flies in the face of any claims of being open and transparent from the Premier. It also means that it will take even longer to answer the many questions that MLA’s and Islanders have about the issues raised in the eGaming report," said Aylward.
