Teacher contract dispute reflection of chaos in government education policy: Lantz

CHARLOTTETOWN –  News that the Prince Edward Island Teachers Federation has walked away from contract negotiations is the latest sign of the chaos that government has created in Island schools, says Progressive Conservative Leader Rob Lantz.
“This latest development is a drastic step and for Island teachers to have to take that step shows how badly government is mishandling education issues. This is creating unneeded anxiety for students, parents and staff,” says Lantz.
Lantz pointed to disruption in the school system created by budget cuts that will leave at least 35 fewer teachers in the classroom this fall, reduced programming resources and governance upheavals, These cuts have strained relations with key stakeholders such as Island school boards and the Teachers Federation. Compounding this is ongoing uncertainty around staffing levels for educational assistants and a general lack of vision and direction from the government.
“It’s clear that the Education Minister and government have lost control of education policy. The Minister says he wants to work with partners like the school boards and teachers but his actions show that government views these groups as little more than partners of convenience,” says Lantz.
