Trivers renews call for online water test results

South Rustico – Having water test results online for schools and public institutions would better inform the public about ongoing water quality issues, says Rustico-Emerald MLA and Opposition Environment Critic Brad Trivers.

Trivers renewed his call following resolution of long-standing water quality issues at École Saint-Augustin in South Rustico that resulted in students and staff having to use bottled water for over eight months.

“The public should be able to have accessible public records of water testing results for public institutions like schools,” said Trivers. “I’m glad the situation at École Saint-Augustin has finally been addressed but the fact that it dragged on for close to a year underscores why better access to water quality information could help the public and ensure that issues are dealt with more promptly.”

Last June, an annual chemical test at École Saint-Augustin showed uranium, arsenic and sodium at levels slightly above what's considered safe for drinking in the well water. Water quality issues at other schools such as Somerset Elementary have also come to light in recent months. Trivers noted that when the Opposition raised these issues during the fall sitting of the Legislature that government indicated that it would look at posting school water tests online.
