Wood Islands Ferry Task Force should be extended: Compton

Wood Islands -  The work of the Wood Islands Ferry Task Force should be extended to help support efforts to secure the long-term future of the Wood Islands ferry service with Nova Scotia, says Belfast-Murray Rivers MLA Darlene Compton.

“The creation of the Wood Islands Ferry Task Force was an important step towards securing the future of the ferry service but it isn’t the only step required. The Task Force can continue to play an important role towards building a strong business case for new investments to improve this vital inter-provincial trade and transportation link,” says Compton.

The Wood Islands Ferry Task Force was created as a result of an Opposition motion moved by Compton and passed unanimously during the Fall 2016 Legislative sitting. The Task Force is made up of three local representatives from the transportation, agriculture, and community development sectors and conducted public consultations this spring. Compton suggests that the consultation period should be extended to also cover ferry users during the summer tourist season, as was the case with government’s Internet Speed Test.

“The announcement of a Request for Information from the federal government on the ferry service was encouraging but it also creates uncertainty with staff and customers about the future. I think that the best way we can keep the momentum towards a long-term solution is to have the Task Force continue its important work,’ concluded Compton.
